LEED®
Process
Projects are registered and certified through the
Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) which
is supported by the United States Green Building
Council (USGBC). All interaction between
the project team and GBCI are through LEED®
Online, a
website containing all necessary tools and
documentation for LEED®
applications. Through LEED®
Online, project teams can manage project
information, complete documentation for
prerequisites and credits, upload supporting
information, submit applications for review, receive
reviewer feedback, and ultimately earn LEED®
certification. Since everything is submitted online,
all information is digital in format.
Progress Timeline
Once
the project is determined feasible for LEED®
certification and is owner approved, the project is
then registered through the GBCI’s LEEDonline
website. Registration gives team members access to
credit templates necessary for applying for
certification. Templates are submitted during two
different phases, the design phase and the
construction phase. Due to the intensity of LEED® and
the requirement for verification of several of the
construction phase credits, the LEED® process can
last well into the occupancy of the building.
